Moscow Kremlin. Red Square

The Moscow Kremlin – is one of the world’s largest ensembles of historical and architectural value. It is justifiably referred to as the heart of Russia. For many centuries the Kremlin has hosted the sovereigns, the patriarchs, noble boyars and the supreme state governing bodies. Currently the Kremlin is the residence of the President of Russia. Its premises accommodate the state historical and cultural museum of Moscow Kremlin, which includes the Armory, Assumption, Archangel Michael and Annunciation Cathedrals, the Church of the Deposition of the Robe, Patriarch Chambers and the Twelve Apostles Church, the Ensemble of the Ivan-the-Great-Bell Tower, artillery collection and the Kremlin bells.

Red Square – is another great landmark of Moscow. Back in ancient times there was a busy trade square to the east of the Kremlin. In the 16th century the square was called Troitskaya, after the Saint Trinity Church that sat where the Saint Basil Cathedral is located today. From the mid 17th the name of the square was changed into “krasnaya“ (red), the ancient Russian for beautiful. Red Square has always been the principle square of Moscow. In the olden days it was a place where heralds announced Tsars’ decrees to the crowds of people, and during the main Christian festivals religious processions from the Kremlin passed through the square. Currently it is mostly a tourist attraction, but as the saying goes, to see Red Square is to see Moscow.
